SYNOPSIS:
A curated mixed media installation using traditional folk patterns and ornaments from across Europe. These patterns provide us with a map into the life and cycles of nature, mystical beings of fairytales, and deep beliefs of people that came before us. They are the secret codes, handed to us from our ancestors, and they often hold symbolic and mystical values of every different country’s traditions.
These gifts (in shapes of symbols, patterns, fractals and ornaments) have been passed on to us over generations through various treasured objects of pristine craftsmanship – embroidered clothes, ornamented crockery, and folk art.
Assembling these patterns into a single public installation is an act of cultural collaboration in itself, as well as our note against cultural appropriation [definition: an act of adopting elements of an outside, often minority culture, including knowledge, practices, and symbols, without understanding or respecting the original culture and context.]
Europia Art Collective’s visual artists will gather together to explore the differences and similarities of how our people translated their life into various interwoven patterns; recognising that after all, the beauty these patterns reveal is only mimicking the world around us.
