SYNOPSIS:

Quick-fire presentations from an eclectic mix of artists and arts organisers provide a snapshot of some of the exciting contemporary visual art being produced in the North West.

AMANDA SUTTON - Venture Arts

Venture Arts is a progressive visual arts organisation based in Hulme, Manchester. They work with learning disabled artists to create and show exciting new visual art. Our vision is a world in which people with learning disabilities are empowered, celebrated, included and valued in the arts, culture and society. Amanda will talk about projects current and future.

EMMA LLOYD - Artist

Language is a powerful tool. With text being central to Lloyd's artistic expression, she builds upon its long, established usage in art, probing both fortes and failures in communication.

JAMES ROPER - Artist

James is a painter based at Bankley Studios.  He has just won the prestigious GM art prize for ‘Sonitus Luminis (Metanoia VI)’ an oil on canvas, and through the use of semi-abstraction his intention is to encourage the viewer to enter into a visual state of limbo.

JUDE WAINRIGHT - Artist

Jude is an artist based in AWOL studios, Ancoats. Her recent solo exhibition at 53Two Theatre introduced her ‘harlequin’ series of self portraits addressing her anxieties & self deprecation. Her work whips up a combination of whimsy & torment for the viewer yet for Jude are merely ways of subconsciously making sense of her world.

LUCY RIDGES - Photographer

Lucy is a visual artist working primarily with analogue photography, alternative photographic processes and traditional mark making techniques. She has dedicated the past 7 years of her creative practice to the representation of the female form via various process-led experimentations with the photographic medium.

MIKE CHAVEZ-DAWSON - Artist

‘The rise, fall and rebirth of Robin Nature-Bold’

Mike Chavez-Dawson talks about his living-portrait/alter-ego Robin Nature-Bold’s inception, conclusion and reassessment, as a method for critique the perils of the ‘art world’.

NEIL GREENHALGH - Old Bank Residency

The Old Bank Residency is a twelve-month occupation of a disused bank, allowing a space for creative practices to experiment, collaborate and grow. Consisting of a Coffee Shop, Cinema, Art Galleries, Canteen, Workshop, and a whole series of interesting projects !

RACHEL GOODYEAR - Artist

Represented by the Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, Rachel uses familiar yet incongruous images within her work, her intricately rendered drawings and films explore the macabre undertones of human existence. Referencing dreams, nightmares, the human psyche and traditional folklore.

RUTA SKUDRAITE - Europia Art Collective

Europia Art Collective is a non-for-profit group of European artists living and creating in Manchester. They gather together to bring awareness of European tradition into the context of today's social and political climate, and nurture the creative expression of their members.
